What does ‘limited edition print’ mean?
A signed limited edition print is a copy of an original piece of art that is printed in a limited number. The prints are limited as Anne only releases a specific number of the prints. She signs each copy of the print and numbers them. The number of copies will always be shown on the print itself, generally 175, in Anne’s case. So, you will see a number on the print like 17/175. This means that this is a limited edition print, number 17 of 150.
What are ‘Artists’ Proofs’ and ‘Studio Proofs’?
Artist’s Proofs are exactly the same as other limited edition prints in terms of how they are printed, the colours, quality of printing, paper etc. Artists number them, often with Roman numerals and with the mark A/P. Artists sign them too, exactly the same as with the limited editions. When checking the colour and quality of the limited edition Anne will receive these artist proofs. Traditionally, Artist’s Proofs, remained the property of the artist. In modern times they are sold at the same time as the limited edition prints. However, there are not as many artists proofs released. Normally only 10-15% of the limited edition run is released as Artist’s Proofs.
A Studio Proof is exactly the same as a limited edition Print. It is the same image, from the same print run, printed on the same paper. Studio Proofs are sometimes given by the artist as gifts or they can be sold along with the limited edition prints or held and sold separately. Studio Proofs are signed by the artist in exactly the same way as a limited edition print, with one exception. The difference is in the numbering. Studio proofs are marked S/P or SP to the bottom left-hand side of the print, where a limited edition print has numbers only. Some are numbered and some are not. So, you may see some Studio Proofs with S/P 8/10 and some just S/P. There are far fewer studio proofs released than limited edition prints, and fewer studio proofs than artist’s proofs.
